Solar PV - [not] Great Expectations!

Unless you account for the price of the batteries.
Its a tricky one, when you calculate the break even point on batteries it needs a decent difference between purchase and sale price, and to assume a set life for the battery itself. If they last long enough they should be able to return the cost and more, but if they die early then you're out of pocket.

When I ran the numbers my PV alone would have broken even after around 6-8 years. With a battery it was 8-10 years, but for every year after break even that they survive my batteries should be saving an additional £200 or so.

If you had put the money in a sock under the bed, you would break even on day one

If you invested it, you could expect growth and/or income from day one, and could withdraw your investment whenever you wanted. After 8-10 years you could expect a useful gain. And investments do not wear out.

Interesting video. includes info on a man that spent £15k and some details on other green aspects.

Sure, crack open the calculator and let me know what % ROI would be needed to match or beat an 8k spend with 1k a year return for 20 years. (Price for just the PV panels when I bought them and lower than actual returns, and 2/3 the expected lifespan)

Its possible I've made a bad investment but I'm not convinced.

Well, if hyundai make diesel hybrids, I stand humbly corrected
Me too. They introduced one in 2018 but a mild hybrid. 48v battery. To my mind these are an extra expense with not much gain over just having the engine.

Eg My Subaru Forester now comes in this form but petrol engine. It can't match the fuel consumption of my diesel. KIa's claims on gain over a pure diesel aren't exactly great. Odd too as Kia engines have a good reputation.
