There's some nonsense spouted on this forum with apparent great authority and absolutely no basis in reality.
A soldier course obviously has no more strength than standard brickwork, it's definitely not a flat arch. A flat arch would hold itself up without mortar, a soldier course wouldn't.
It's purely a cosmetic choice, so that you can't see the raw underside of the bricks. It needs a lintel, like standard courses of bricks do, and unlike a flat arch which doesn't.
Give up the willy waggling and denial of reality to avoid saying you made a mistake. There are some fragile egos knocking around here.
