Someone is trying to start a war in the Ukraine, It's NOT Russia (edit: yes it is)

No sanctions will take a good while to bite

Germans have had a big wake up call over this Ukraine caper ;)

moving to 2% of economy which technically could make Germany the biggest military power in Europe ??

BREAKING:

Comparethemarket pulls meerkat ads from TV news after Ukraine invasion | Advertising | The Guardian

The price comparison website Comparethemarket has pulled its ads featuring the animated Russian meerkat Aleksandr Orlov from news bulletins in light of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The company – which spent an estimated £90m on marketing in the UK over the last year, about two-thirds of which was on TV campaigns – said it had reviewed its media plan to make sure the ads did not appear around content such as news bulletins on the Ukrainian conflict.

“The Comparethemarket meerkats are fictional characters,” said a spokesperson for the company, which is owned by the Peterborough-based financial services firm BGL. “They have no association with Russia and the current situation. We are continually reviewing our advertising to ensure we’re being sensitive to the current situation.”

The ads – which feature Orlov, a Russian billionaire meerkat from Moscow and his sidekick, Sergei – have run since 2009 and have been instrumental in taking the 16-year-old company from also-ran status to one of the top comparison sites in the UK.

Ukraine did not learn it's lesson when Russia annexed Crimea. The mad Ukraininian PM decided to pi$$ off Russia more by saying it would like to join the NATO. I blame that guy for single-handedly causing this mess.

I blame the 'guy' on the other side who decided to send in troops, tanks etc. Just saying ...

There are report about coloured female students not being let out of Ukraine. Thought be a total of 75,000 asian students there and both sexes having problems.

The Swiss have gone along with the SWIFT changes. Assets too by the sound of it.

Ukraine did not learn it's lesson when Russia annexed Crimea.

An amusing troll post from a person who perhaps previously said that Czechoslovakia and Poland should have handed over their territory meekly in 1939. Appeasement and surrender are his preferred options.

It's no surprise that countries who previously spent 50 years under occupation are very reluctant to let it happen again.

Are sanctions likely to be enough?

Does wounding The Bear make it more dangerous?

It might make Russians fight harder against the war.

Heard an interesting report from a Russian soldier today, could have been propaganda, but it suggesting soldiers were told Ukraine would welcome them, but instead they are forced to attack civilians. Probably propaganda, but likely true too.

Ultimately, it needs to be made clear that Putin cannot economically gain from taking over Ukraine. But it will mean millions will suffer for a long time.

You are partly correct.
I blame more so the EU/NATO for inciting the Ukraine to join EU/NATO. There are millions in Ukraine that are Russian speaking and pro Russian but no one sensible wants a war.

Ukraine banned or tried to ban the Russian language in certain places - see link below that did not help.

Look at NI & Ireland the clowns even speak the same language but the extreme elements were killing the other and innocent people and British armed forces that initially went out there to keep safe the miniorites.

I've seen a bit of footage re polands border, asian students were not allowed to cross and manhandled.

No one is perfect.

I blame politicnas on both sides IE our lot for winding up this **** putin and it for doing what it is. I balme the weak bastards around him for making nuclear threats to millions and his own people will be wiped out but that **** does not give a ****.

Re economy, Putin is only hurt as his cronies and him have property etc frozen he could not giver a **** re the ordianry people

So like you I blame our lot but the **** as well. Talking of ****s, that woman reprsenting England she needs to be careful with her words she needs to go!!

I wondered about other assets
Russia had more than 2,000 tons of gold at the end of January, according to data from the International Monetary Fund, accounting for just over 20% of its reserves. It's the fifth-biggest sovereign gold owner globally.

that's an interesting introduction.

Please explain how you think this "incitement" manifested itself.

It's only fair for me to point out that Putin's attempts to recreate the Soviet Empire have done very much more to encourage the nearby countries to seek new friendships and alliances.

So I hear.

Tell me how you think they will be able to trade this gold.

As was touched on during a tv prog today, some (most) of the truly wealthy Russian elite might not be overly affected by some of the sanctions depending on how their money is managed and routed. For example, the luxury yachts docked here there and everywhere across the globe, many of them registered through shell companies and so on. Known to be owned by Russians but on paper they're not.

As has been touched on though, the hope with sanctions is it starts to create pressure and tension within Russia.

I just can't see how, from his perspective, Putin can win this now. He's highly unlikely to withdraw, but to go in with even more aggression is going to increase pressure from the West and possibly other countries Russia thought of as allies.

Why do you play thick all the time??

I included the reason in the post
