I'v just moved in to a 60's built house.

The lounge has two ceiloing lights controlled by one dimmer switch. I want to replace it with a standard switch.

The switch has a single wire and two wires twisted together in another terminal.

With the switch turned on both terminals are 'live' but with the switch off neither are live.

I don't understand...can anyone help shed light on this?

Your tester is forked...Or are you using a volt stick?

A one way switch has not got the capability to kill the power to both terminals...

My guess would be that the terminal with two in is the feed, given the age of the property.

Check again!!

I was just using ol' faithful electrical screwdriver..I understand your statements which is why I'm confused..I'll try and get the details of the switch

let me put it this way, would you use a tin of beans to hammer in a nail?

no, I thought not.

you should always use the correct tool for the correct job.

electrcians use a multi meter.

if you want one you can get them from a variety of places, but for what you want maplins will be fine

Ah i misread. Thought u were asking if i used them! I use a GS38 approved voltage indicator of course :D

Or the nearest live animal i can find....
