Speed Tests

In General Discussion above, BoxCleva provided a link to a speed test. I took advantage of the facility but have no idea what the results signify. Can anyone supply a link to a site that provides an explanation?

Try http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

ADSL Speed_____Typical Download___________Typical Upload
512Kbps___________460 Kbps________________200-240 Kbps
1Mbps_____________920 Kbps________________200-240 Kbps
2Mbps____________1840 Kbps________________200-240 Kbps
8Mbps____________7000 Kbps________________400-750 Kbps

Or try http://speedtest.net/ Which will give you a url link that you can post e.g.

2.9 Mbps; 2973 Kbps 358.21 KBps :?: :?: :?:
2973 Kbps refers to your download speed and 358.21 Kbps refers to upload speed. At a guess I would say your maximum ADSL speed would be around 3.5-4Mbps.

You should run speed tests several times at different times of the day and take an average to get a more accurate result

Hmm, not sure I think the Kb and KB bit (pardon the pun) is relevant here the speed of 2973 Kbs / 8 is ~ 350 KBs

I have to say that I am a little confused now where the speed figures originated from. OP referred to BoxCleva link which I believe was to speedchecker.org. This site appears to give just download e.g.
"When we tested this connection on 2008-11-15 at 16:12 it downloaded at a speed of 3014.59 Kbps."

Whereas Broadbandspeedchecker and others give both. e.g.
Download 3056Kbps and Upload 499Kbps.

Therefore I assumed that bolo had used a site that showed Download and upload speeds

Cheers for the help. Although I haven't a clue what to do with them, I can now access various speed tests.

Next question. What is my broadband width?

Realistically, variable.

I simply clicked on the link provided by BoxCleva on page 1 of the 'U-tube' topic in General Discussion above. The figures quoted in my second posting here, were taken from the 'Speedchecker.org' results. These were below the "When we tested this connection etc".

I trust that this info clears up the confusion.

I was correct in my reply about being confused - looking at the site again it does show figures in Kbps, KBps, MBps and Mbps. Sorry for my incorrect assumptions about figures relating to Download and Upload speeds to you and 2scoops

Hi Bolo ,
The only reason I posted that link was for the OP to check his net connection download speed so that he could rule that out as a possibility for his buffering issue.

It is not at all uncommon for ISP's not to deliver what they promise. Back in the day , I was a PC Tech and it was quite commonplace for a customer to be getting 1mb when they were paying for 2mb. More often than not this was the fault of the ISP. There are obviously a multitude of causes , contention ratio , hardware , phone line etc etc etc. Tiscali, in particular, used to be a s0ds for not delivering what they promised.

I know that BoxCleva and I hope that you dont mind me taking advantage of your suggestion. Cant comment on the rest of your post as it's a bit above my computer illiterate brain.
