Yes, this was in the paper a couple of weeks ago. Amazing discovery.

Hope they make a TV programme about their recovery and further developments.

Bet if they assemble them they start first time.
Fantastic planes. Without them and the Hurricanes we would have been lost.
(Not to mention the other greats like the Lancaster, Wellington, Blenhiem etc)

Talking of buried treasure, after the war the Americans based at Burtonwood dug huge trenches in the airfield and bulldozed massive amounts of equipment and tools into the ground, this would make an excellent project for 'Timeteam'

A kittyhawk was found in the Sahara only couple months ago, preserved in the sand.

Here is a clip of it, interesting read on the youtube link

Is that the one that was on the news tonight?
Only caught the last bit of it.

The Spitfires seem to have all the publicity and there are still nearly 50 able to fly. But the Hurricanes had more in service and shot down more enemy planes.

There are some of each within a mile of me here.

It will be interesting to see what condition the Burmese planes turn out to be in.

I live a couple of miles away from Filton, Bristol (BAE/Rolls Royce works and home of Concorde). They have a resident Spitfire that regularly uses the runway there, and is often flying over us.

I know what you mean about fighters Di, especially the Spitfire with it's distinctive engine sound. You always know what it is without looking. Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up for some reason.

We're really lucky to have these fly-pasts, but not for much longer. The aero works have been scaled back drastically in recent years, and the runway has been sold to build new houses. Same runway that Concorde first took off from. That's progress.

Filton was a very important site for aero engineering and production. During WW2 they had a squadron of Spitfires based their to protect the works. All vanishing now though.

surly if the damp and salts have found there way in they may be in a unusable state

i off course hope they are perfect :D
