Hi, I am looking to reinforced the rafters in order to fit a Velux window. The problem I have is my current rafters are 4.6m long and there is no way physically to fit a 4.6m continuous timber into the attic. Is there a standard method for splicing two pieces of timber before bolting it onto the existing rafters?

Thanks

You don't splice, you sister the joists onto the existing. Providing your joints don't overlap (assuming one joist and two sisters) you should be OK. What does your S/E say they want?

You have to remove tiles for velux so you can put timbers thru the hole.

Normally you just need it to go from the ridge to beyond the purlin, or as far as you can.
