I've just had 10 grab lorries worth of muck removed from my driveway in order to level and landscape it. After retaining walls have been built i'll have to build the sub-base up with a layer of 150mm of type 1 or crusher run. I've been pondering the best way of doing this as i'll need approx 55 tonne for 185m2. A 6/8 wheel lorry will probably sink on the drive as its mainly soggy sandy soil now with the typical British summer.

I have my own ideas but I'd be interested to hear how you guys would go about it? The quarry for aggregates is only 2-3 miles away.

Is it coming in lorries or bags?

Is the drive short enough for a long arm grabber to stretch ?

Or lay sheets down to allow tipper access

I haven't decided how to get it delivered yet as that's kind of the point. As far as I can see I have 2 options:

1. I could hire a tipper but typically the payload is 1 tonne so that would be 55 trips to the quarry but I would be able to dump it exactly where its needed.
2. If it came in a 6/8 wheel lorry, i'd get 20 tonne dropped at the entrance to the drive as a grab won't extend far enough. I'd then use a 1.5 tonne digger to move it around.

I was hoping that someone might have a 3rd option that i hadn't though of.

if you put down a temporary ply surface could the truck reverse in, slightly open the tailgate and tip while moving forwards?
the trick would be clearing the ply rather than burying it, but if laid 8 feet wide by 4 deep, the truck could shift in 4 foot increments.
I have never done this - but have seen it done. they had ropes already through the sheets to make moving them easier.

That's not a bad idea. Might cost a bit in ply but probably no more than tipper hire and diesel...probably wouldn't need a digger either.

If you used shuttering ply and if you could buy it from a reclaimation yard it may not cost too much
But maybe ask the quarry as they may have ideas

Perhaps the quarry have different sizes of tippers. A 4 wheeler carries about 10 tons, a 6 wheeler about 16 tons, an 8 wheeler about 20 tons. If you got deliveries of 10 ton, starting by tipping the first one at the driveway entrance, you might just about have time to roughly level it with your mini excavator such that the next load can be a bit further up the drive - and so on.

It depends on how accurate you need to be regarding levels. If you have complex gradients or need a specific thickness on certain areas if block paving etc then having it dumped in a pile and using a digger dumper combo to shift it around is the easiest way to get it done accurately.

The cheapest route is to get loads dumped progressively further up the drive and then spread them with a digger. The problem with this is that you will find it hard to deal with the spot where its dumped. Removing most of the pile will be easy but unless your handy with a digger You will end up digging chunks out of the sub grade and bringing mud back up to the surface as you try to deal with the last foot. The way to avoid this is to drag the last bit rather than lift it. This will make judging the depth difficult. using pegs or some other method to regulate the depth will help enormously.

Use the digger to spread it roughly and then rake it level by hand, compact it all thoroughly with a vibrating roller.

get the stone from your grab company, they can grab it on at the front first and then drive on until they can reach everywhere
