Stair runner

Can I apply the finest plywood to my stairs as they are in an absolute state, so I can fit a runner down, give me a yes or no answer, it's that simple don't give me more problems, can it be done, has it been done..

How would you deal with bullnose on edge which I assume you have ?

hadn't really thought about that, i have will have 2 inches of stair showing either side of runner, which am not looking for it to be perfect, as long as its flush with stair i could wood fill any gaps, then paint

'Thinnest" is what I think you mean.

Seams little point. If the treads are sufficiently strong then adding ply to the tread will do little - you should lay Underlay on each tread which wraps over the Bullnose. Affixed to the underside of the Bullnose or just to the top of the riser. Fix on top of the tread close to the riser.
The stair carpet then goes over the underlay.

Easy enough to make good just 2 inches either side , ply is pointless.

When I said the thinnest ply I meant the least thickest plywood as in the thinnest mm, eg 5mm, don't believe I had to explain this really, the stairs are strong just old hand have layers of paint and some wood has splinter therefore needs filling, to save all the work of clearing them up, my idea was to lay ply down I know about the underlay and runner after that.

Why would it be pointless, they have a lot of layers of paint to get off and some of the stairs has splintered they need sanding filling, paint burning off, I was look for an easier solution to doing this

You can buy stair tread cover that have the nosing but they may be too thick. You could put in the thin ply each side on the risers and then use 2 inch wide iorn on veneer that may go around the nosing. The get a perfect match than also put the veneer on the riser sides.

Another suggestion is to fix a length of 6mm quadrant moulding (assuming you can't get a 5mm one) to the top of each bullnose, then cut rectangular panels of ply to fit snugly between those and the backs of the treads. Sand off the 1mm to make level with the ply. That would not be great but would at least give the underlay and runner a rounded surface to fit over, which would presumably make for less wear than the sharp edge of a sheet of ply.
