I moved into a modern terraced house last August and have spent every waking minute (apart from my job as a dental nurse) doing DIY. If anyone is interested, I changed my stairs from boring orangey stained wood to wrought iron and sanded/stripped the treads. I found a company on the internet called North Valley Forge who were very efficient and courteous. The rails (some quite plain, some with spirals) were very reasonably priced for untreated metal and were quite easy to paint. I recommend this company - I think the stairs look pretty good now!
