I got stitched up once with a clocked astra, before mot online records.
Seemed decent at the time and it was cheap.
But no history and one key only.
I took a gamble and i knew i was doing so.
3 months later the turbo went and the car was constantly going into limp mode.
I sold it to a guy who claimed he could fix it and i lost a grand.
A couple of days later the guy wanted the money back because apparently there was more problems.
I told him i sold it as seen and he knew about the limp mode, in fact he saw it himself on the test drive.
Then even worse, a couple of weeks later he called and said the car had been clocked.
From the photocopy of my v5c he had contacted the previous owner to ask for history and they sent him all previous mot.
Car had been clocked by the "dealer" by 100k miles.
Fortunately I was unaware of that and the car had been clocked before i bought it.
The guy took the dealer to court, got a ccj against him, but as it happens the dealer closed the limited company he was operating and opened another one, same premises, same director, different company name.

Suppose it's like being mugged. Instead of taking your wallet or mobile, they're relieving you of something a lot more valuable.
A while back the repair garage/small dealer I used quite satisfactory for repairs for a number of years (the place was run by two guys, one mechanic and one dealer) I found myself reading in the local press the dealer had been sent to jail for clocking motors, a few months before I'd asked him to source me a Clio Sport with low mileage. Seems I may have had a fortunate escape.

1 day, just the time to get 3 meals and smuggle some heroin inside.
Took the wife's car for first MOT since we had it, exhaust had section welded in after cat removal.So MOT we bought it with must have been dodgy. Luckily insurance took care of it and excess was only £45.

So did someone steal it and then took the time to weld it back together - it's the metal inside that's valuable I believe
No cat stolen and seller must have welded in a replacement section to get rid of it without loss.
