A 700%, or any other, variation would be a rip off if there are like-for-like estimates, but it does remind people that pricing before a job is very difficult exercise.

I have seen jobs which have been done well and correctly and were expensive, but there was no subsequent problem. I have seen jobs which were cheap and I wouldn't want the result however cheap they were. What goes along with price suggestions is a caution that price is only one but not the most important factor. It may also prompt some people to ask for more information so they can tackle the work themselves.

If we refuse to give cost suggestions as a matter of policy, then maybe we should refuse to give practical information on grounds of safety.

Do people care about safety? This includes professionals. They leave the filling loop connected, AND they refuse to check the PRV is not stuck on the grounds "it might not seal again"

Breezer treats us readers as if we are idiots.

I find the ball park figures helpful. I am not a trained plumber but do know the difference things like access, unseen complications and geography can make.

I haven't seen any complaints here that figures have misled people.

I would suggest that if you don't like ball park prices, don't read them.
