If your kitchen light is a flourescent type. It will light up, without any electrical connection at all, in the presence of radiation. Check that you havn't left a lump of Uranium or Plutonium too close to it.

And many old school flourescents will flicker or stay on with a reverse polarity aswell

Thanks for the advice, wires were correct, new switch was all that was needed

Errr - if it was just a dodgy switch, and the wiring was fine, how come the light stayed on when you disconnected all the wires from the switch???
