Hello

A new close coupled toilet (Bathstore, Euro Mono) leaks from a small machined hole in the underside of the front of the bowl's base. It's only a little - perhaps 100ml over a day or so, and seems to happen after a flush

Is it cracked somewhere internally?

Any help gratefully received

Dom

hole at the front ?

not sure what you mean by front, but leaks when flushing are normally to do with an ill fitting doughtnut

You've lost me here matey. What small machined hole? You need to provide more info or a pic would be even better.

Underneath the toilet's base, at the very front, is a small hole (perhaps 1.5mm in diameter) which has been deliberately cast into the porcelain. Water gradually leaks from here following a flush, spreading along the base, for about 2 days. I've had the toilet up on bricks outside to test where this leak is coming from

My guess is that this hole is there to allow water to escape which has got into the structure of the bowl (which has a void between the inner and outer walls)

I was wondering if anyone out there knew what this was for and how I could stop this from happening as I don't want to buy a new bowl for £150!

Thanks

Dom

When you flush a WC all of the 'water' is supposed to go into the soil pipe.

If there's some on the floor then either the pan is cracked or you haven't installed it correctly.

Thought it would be easy to get instructions off bathstore web page.

Was not  that there were none available.

They sure are a carp supplier.

Was installed by my plumber... and re-installed several times to try to get to the bottom of why this thing keeps leaking, so I don't think it's the installation

If it's cracked somewhere internally (there's nothing visable), I may as well just chuck it on the skip

Won't bore you with the months of agony we've gone through with Bathstore, having made the mistake of buying 2 bathrooms for them (our house is being extended) and finding that none of their stuff fits properly and that they don't care!

Two previous customer supplied suites from Bathstore. A nightmare to install and as for aftercare its non existence. Their answer is "we have never had this problem before, has it been installed correctly.

So when the third customer comes along with a Bathstore suite they can waste another installers time.

In that case it must be a faulty pan.

The law entitles you to a full refund for faulty goods.

You merely have to return the pan to the store and request a refund - no more effort than taking it to the local dump. If they refuse, then follow up with two letters before filling in the forms at Money Claim Online. Don't forget to add on the court application fee and a modest sum for expenses,

Whilst I sympathise somewhat with your frustration, the situation in which you find yourself is the indirect result previous customers not being bothered to pursue the supplier for recompense. If Bathstore.com was sued every time they deserved it, then they'd either buck up their ideas or go out of business.

Pity, if you'd asked here we could have told you!

Putting it a skip would be a bit of a waste. How about throwing it through their window?

Even though it isn't brand new now it was obviously never fit for purpose.

Don't throw it. If there is a 'manufactured' hole in the pan then I'd uninstall and take it along to the Bathstore and ask them to explain what exactly this hole is for.
As Softus says, when you flush a Loo (any loo), it is designed (or should be), so that ALL of the water is flushed into the Soil Pipe (apart from the water required to provide the new trap within the U). I have NEVER seen a Loo that has been designed as you suggest, with an escape hole for water that 'may' enter into the structure of the pan. IT SHOULD NOT ENTER THE STRUCTURE! If it does the pan is gooshed! It must be cracked somewhere internally or there is a manufacturing fault. I'm not that 'up' on how ceramic suites are produced but the hole 'could' be a firing hole. You sometimes see them on ceramic pots. A wire is used to support the pot with the kiln when it is being fired to allow the firing process to reach all areas of the pot.
I'd love to hear what the manager has to say. If he does tell you its there for the purpose you outlined then tell him we all said he's a 'Soil Stack'... They're full of S*** at times too!!! :)

3 years later... and i have the same problem.
Ive been told the holes are air holes to stop the pan from exploding in the kiln.
I uninstalled the wc and ran colured water through the flush hole... and watched as the water dripped qiuckly through the same hole that you spoke about.
What was your outcome???

Hi Rick,

Nothing positive to tell you I'm afraid.

Seems like it was just a faulty bowl with a minute internal crack somewhere between China and here. I was already deep into legal nonsense with Bathstore at that time - I may even have accepted compensation for a separate failure of their specification & equipment (I still loathe this company, BTW!) so didn't pursue it with them. I'd also had the unit on site for months (although boxed) so it was mute whether they'd have done anything about it. I was exhausted by it all to be honest.

Resolution? I bought a different product from somewhere else and have never since let an opportunity to spread the joy of Bathstore pass me by!

Frustrating... to the point of insanity.
Oh well, will look at different avanues and see where it takes me.
thanks for replying, cheers mate
