I recently purchased a house and it has a strange plug next to the fuse box that I can’t figure out what it’s for. I have attached some images the plug

Outdoor lights, ring type doorbell? Could be powering anything, turn it off and see what stops working.

What does it say on the label on top of the plug in power supply?

The sticker on the top is the same as the one in the front.

I don’t have a door bell or outside lights and the two cables that come out of the other side connector the earth coloured cable goes to right side of the cupboard and into the wall and the brown cable goes in the wall at the back of the cupboard and then comes back out as solid wire without insulation and goes to the left side of the cupboard but from there I can not find any trace of it.

It looks a lot like this...

"Electro osmotic damp proofing" apparently!

Yea that seem to be it. The report mentioned an old chemical DPC but nothing about this system. I am wondering if I should just unplug it or leave it be.

As it consumes the square root of b*gger all power wise I would just leave it switched on. Of course we are also assuming the wall wart still puts out a voltage

It really ought to have a label saying what it does.

If you know, add one.

Hah . Electro osmosis damp
Proof system! Was fairly popular back in my early days as a cheap form of damp proofing and was supposed to be left permanently on and intact.

The basic idea was that electrolysis was natural in the flow of electrons in a damp wall and you reversed the polarity therefore the direction of flow to combat the damp .

Using earth for one pole of the electrode then the other electrode was a fine conductive wire buried in the wall at a higher level and the constant voltage between wall and floor caused a long slow
Migration of natural salts in the wall to travel down not up.

The voltage was very low , hence safe and the current was very low too and must be left on at all times and unbroken.

So much for the science (or pseudo-science). A lot of people were convinced that it worked and some firms made a lot of money by providing it.

Was it “snake oil”? I have no actual evidence that it was not but you know what people can be like! Convinced it must work then everything proved that it did work and all the evidence that it does not work was discounted , just like religion and politics and a host of other human beliefs.

Look at all of the examples of perpetual motion on YouTube etc and you will find good examples of snake oil beliefs.

Snake oil backed by pseudo science is a very strong force in the human mind
What chance has objective truth seeking got?

So does it work?
Everyone has their own answer ;)

I recall only too clearly the money changing hands to chase out a course of mortar and slide old roof slates into place then hide the gaps with a smear of mortar easch side... Then at the next house change the Mortgage company would insist on a new survey and hence chemical injection.... Oh and sadly the salt would still come through the new plaster.

We do know that!

We also know that some people's views about such matters do not necessarily remain unchanged ... as we know, there are some who,not all that long ago were dismissing any mention of 'surge suppression' as being nothing more than snake oil, but who are now promoting/ championing "SPDs" (and even implying that they they are now 'required') :)

Well we are allowed to change our minds, especially when something demonstrates the benefit.

Such as smart meters... Our fixed price term expired and to maintain a respectable deal the SM are a requirement... OMG what a fiasco, two bills in and we have gone from a lovely steady DD to:
First bill:
Nearly doubling the DD but changed to 15% increase.

Second bill:
£400 in credit but only because the gas meter couldn't be read, our new DD was to be £3.
We provided the reading and went into £3000 in debt. More phone calls.
Confirming the gas usage we went to £7000 in credit. and next email only a few minutes later said there was a problem and they would look into it.
Confirmed the £3000 debt in an email which included the debt collection agency threats.
I suggested I removed the meter and took it to a place of their choice to read it themselves...threats about tampering :ROFLMAO:
The last email from us stated we would be cancelling DD arrangements until they send someone round to A) red it themselves & B) fix the problem [I did warn about the bad mobile phone coverage here before the new deal was agreed]
Suddenly they calculated we are in £30 debt which we expect to be at this time of year and the DD can remain as was.

Each of the above emails resulted in a notification our DD had been programmed to change.

I hate to think what's going to happen next time.
