Over the last week or so, we have been getting a strong smell that resembles paint thinner in our bathroom and kitchen. We haven't done any decorating or stored any chemicals anywhere in the flat. The only thing that has happened is that the extractor fan has blown and is no longer working. At some times the smell is really strong and then it can fade away for a few days and then come back stronger again. The heating system is all electric powered so it definitely isn't a gas leak (unless it is a sewer gas leak). Does anyone have any ideas to what may be causing this smell?

Burning plastic in the extractor fan which heats up when you turn the light on?

Andy

This may be the cause. The extractor fan broke last week and is no longer running when the light is switched on. I have had the light on in the bathroom once this morning but the smell has been strong most of the day today.

Many bathroom extractor fans have a permanent live electrical feed for a run-on facility, so they are powered up in a 'standby mode' 24/7, not just when you turn the light on. Turning the light on just sends a signal to the timer to start spinning the fan.

Completely agree with last post. Just to add to that turn fan off at the isolation switch, should be just outside bathroom, see if the smell reduces or goes completely. A matter of elimination.
