String around plumbing joint (Ed.)

Quite, it's on the water circuit. The "string" looks to me like a tether to make sure the screw-on cap doesn't get lost. cap
That's the white plastic cap retaining ring. But there is some string showing on the screwed joint for the drain cock. I thought it looked like hemp, hence my mention of an old plumber.

The cap is also used as a knob to turn the spindle.

You're right, I hadn't looked closely enough :oops:. Hemp used with Bosswhite or similar. Not to be used on gas as the joint is porous, but it was in my first house, and it smelled slightly.
