student demonstration

Does anyone actually understand what the new fee structure is? some mp's are saying students will pay less... students are saying they'll have to sell their kidneys next week, just to stay at uni !

In light of recent events, I've decided to organise a demo of my own.
(Ban Jerusalem Artichokes....or something, it doesn't matter.)

Nothing too large to manage....... In fact, just me.
I'll take the standard issue placard, spray can, matches, and hammer.

Going by the recent police performance, I feel fairly confident that my smashing windows, lighting fires and spraying monuments will be seen as my democratic right.
I shall carry on my merry way without my a*se being kicked and having to even think about paying for the damage.

Yep.

WORLDS GONE MAD.

Major protest, nil result, RIOT!! how else to get a result? Remember the poll tax riots? Any protest isn't going to change anything, a riot will.

Did anyone notice how easily the glass broke? Its not toughened so it's either laminated or the original float glass that came with the car.

You'd think it would have been upgraded to bullet proof?

Bullet proof glass is simply laminated glass - it isn't toughened.

it must be toughened or it would have just shattered.

Toughened and laminated, like ATM screens are, they have the glass cover, then the monitor is behind that, all military spec, not like you would have in your cars windscreen, that's weaker, so the firebrigade can cut through it, or it can be kicked out in an emergency.

I can't quite sort this one out in my head.

On the one hand, I think that the goverment should come down hard on such behavior - send in the army to gain control rather than a bunch of perspex-wielding bobbies who normally only excell at dishing out speeding tickets.

On the other hand I think good on them (the students) and that well behaved protests never got anyone anywhere in this country. If there had been no rioting, the story would have been second on the news and HRH would have gone to the theatre in his limo as usual. Perhaps if we all made more noise, the government might take more notice of the people it is elected to represent.

These type of demos , (violent) are a national past time in france ! as some one else said a peaceful demo will go un noticed !

As for the student fees , some one has to pay he fees eg the tax payer ! alot on the demo have probably never paid income tax ? way I see if u go to uni to study something of importance that may benefit society than it should be free , such as medicine , certain types of engineering ect those going to study dance , music , drama , the law ?
should get nothing , no loans subsidy's ect bunch of wasters

As Transam says, these students have probably never paid income tax in their lives. If they want further education, let them pay for it. There should not be an automatic right to free further education. Students from foreign countries too should have to pay for their education here.. Admittedly these demonstrations have been hijacked by people with another agenda and have shown the students in a bad light, but can we be sure that no students at all were not involved with the violent scenes??
Hmmmmmmm

Looking at the details of the new repayment scheme, it seems that whilst fees have been increased, the actual impact on the student is lessened and spread over many years - and may ultimately be written off. And if earnings drop, so do repayments

Yes, those who go on to good, well paid jobs will pay more money back sooner, but should be able to afford it.

It does seem that this fee change has been badly communicated/interpreted rather than it just being plain unfair

There is still the danger of underfunding and uncertainty for many universities which will deter less well-off students, whilst the likes of Oxbridge groups still only attract the elite who can afford it whatever it costs

As for the riots, I can't believe that we have a Police force that can't deal with a large amount of disorder, blatant vandalism and physical attack.

IMO, the Police should have been in there, in force, whacking ringleaders with their batons and arresting them and removing them from the rest of the mob.

What a joke. Some Police chiefs need sacking

You live in a tower of shame, and disilluson...you advocate police violence, AND support the students at the same time?
