Do I need to move them all, don't have a clue what half of them do?
I have created a new user and TBH it does seem to be quicker, was a bit stick at first, the page froze and turned red. Had to do a manual shut down and reboot. It's was trying to load autocad 2008 but encountering problems
But it had much improved with the help of daozen.

Glad its all fixed for you, every little thing you do can aid its performance but the only way you will ever achieve the full performance capability is with a fresh install, only tonight I have been given 2 laptops to do just that

but if your happy with its current speed then why bother, if it aint broke!!

also....your PC is massivley under spec to run Autocad 2008 it must run like a 1 legged dog, :)

TBH not really used it, I sat the exam a couple of years back and got a free version of it, to do the college work.
Not ever come in handy, was hoping to progress in to electrical design but not worked out yet. :cry:
So what happen with the other accounts.
I have the one that I used, my partner has one and now this one we have just created?

You are both true Gents.

Sorry for the late reply, was getting hammered at work.

You'll need to carry out a few preventative steps to make sure you reduce the risk of further infections if you keep you current user. Fresh installs are always a last resort.

Clearing out the junk

It's a good idea to clear out all your temp files every now and again. This helps your computer from slowing down. It also can assist in getting rid of files that may contain malicious code that could re-infect your computer.
  • CCleaner Very good cleaner and the registry scanner is worth a shot as its one of the safer ones.
  • BleachBit quickly frees disk space, removes hidden junk, and easily guards your privacy. Erase cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, remove unused localizations, shred logs, and delete temporary files. Designed for Linux and Windows systems, it wipes clean 70+ applications
======================================================================================================
Start-up items

Manage your startup items and catch some spyware when they try to install with one of these programs; both allow you to view the list of programs that run automatically whenever you start your computer. You can edit an entry, add a new entry, and disable items. They also allow you to delay the startup of selected items, which can help reduce bottlenecks caused by too many applications starting at the same time:General advice for the use of these is to only have your security software running when the computer starts, delay everything else. Deciding what can and can't be removed can be difficult and trial and error. This is done by disabling it (not removing it) and seeing if you notice anything that isn't working as it should. Google is your friend for researching your startup items. Eventually you'll realise what you don't need running and can remove it.

Miscelleanous
  • QtWeb a lightweight, secure and portable browser having unique user interface and privacy features.
  • Pidgin an easy to use and free chat client used by millions. Connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and more chat networks all at once.Supported chat networks:,AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ,IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, and Zephyr.
  • PDFX Viewer free PDF viewer thats a lot faster than Adobes.
  • MVPS Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local (your) machine. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability to block other applications from connecting to the Internet, providing the entry exists.
  • Some worthwhile Firefox privacy/security add-ons:
  • KeePass a free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager.
  • Toucan a small utility allowing you to synchronise, backup and secure your data with more options than the built in suite utilities.
======================================================================================================

Remember to keep your security up-to-date and scan everything you download from the internet, don't trust anything. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get. Anything that pops up from a browser saying you're infected is worth being suspicious about.

All the best.
daozen

daozen thanks for getting back to me thought I had lost you!
My system is XP, so what do I?
Edit above update:
done a bit of googling and manage to complete all your steps up to installing Java.

This happened;
WRNING JAVA(TM) UPDATE
bin\awt.dll:eek:ld file not found. However, a file of the sama name was found. No update done since file content do not match.

then this;
JAVA(TM)
Updates fail to apply
changes for your system

then
ERROR 1722
something to do with windows installer :cry:

Don't understand bleachbit, what do you do with it?

If you have CCleaner you don't need BleachBit. They basically do the same thing, both are mentioned to give you a choice.

Try here and let me know what it says reference you Java: http://www.javatester.org/version.html

I would also try uninstalling Java (or deleting the program files and running a registry cleaner like ccleaner if uninstalling fails) and downloading it and installing the latest version (from the second link I provided).

Not good enough for Windows 7 am afraid, do you know anyone who is able to re-install XP for you, I charge £20 and if I have to back up data I add £5 but I am not a shop or a business which would probably be closer to £100

If you do decide to get professional to help make sure you ring around at least 3 people, all you need is a re-install you will leave no files on the PC

A backup image is a good idea so if this happens again you can go back to the fresh clean install as and when you need to

Prentice, don't take this to heart if you are interested in Win7.
I have run Win7 on older hardware than this with the same amount of ram, and it worked better than XP! (just used for Office and Internet though! - no 3D games!!!). Your Compaq is actually a good candidate as they used quality components from trusted manufacturers usually.
That said, it's not certain either, as the main issue is driver availability for your hardware, though with many older machines, even if drivers can't be found on the net, they are still often available when you install hardware by searching microsoft's site for new drivers. Main thing is, don't pay for it (W7) unless your sure (Microsoft have a free download to check the machine for Win7 - not perfect but good indication). Plus, buy an extra Gig of ram and it'll run even better (same with XP too if you use Office 2007 and other large apps, but not so much).
Also check on HP (they bought Compaq) website for any info or drivers for Win7 for your model - may help if they have this.

Boogie,
Is windows 7 much better than XP?
I'm not really that bothered what operating system I have, ain't no snob!
All I want is for it to run right, without freezing up and going at snails pace.
I don't do games or download films, sometimes a bit of music, some PDFs then everything else is internet searchs, microsoft works and some business software I have for invoicing, costing, accounting, quotes, iventory, general business docs etc...

Well, I can only give my opinion, and while I've been into IT proffesionally for twenty years (not a novice), I still only have my perspective (& I get it wrong sometimes! :) ).

When I first tried W7, I fully expected to put XP back on after, but not used XP since, and I never looked back! Nothing like Vista (although looks similar), very good IMHO, and I'm not especially an MS fan (having to fix the faults at work, doesn't endear them to me). It performs great, as long as you have the RAM to handle what you do. I actually got it running on a 6/7 year old HP laptop with 1.8MHz single core cpu & 1 Gig ram, and it was better than XP.
There again, I've tried more modern and powerful machines that wouldn't take it at all. So you gotta have a m/board and components that it can handle, the MS download to check for upgrade compatibility should give a good idea.
Best to have 2 Gig RAM if at all possible (RAM's cheap).

There again, unless you have a copy already, you have the cost to consider, and if you've got to pay full wack for 7, is it going to be worth it?

What's your model (code on the compaq label somewhere)?

Also, have a look here as well:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...48&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3357417

not sure if this the model code but on compaq serial plate says
Presario SR1000
Product SR1460UK

By the way, it's not a notebook or laptop I have. It's a desktop PC if it makes a difference?
