Talked myself out of a rewire today.

I went to a house today and a spark has fitted and notified a new c/u and told the owners that they need a rewire. They have all pvc cable from what I can see.

His paperwork consists of an EIC and Schedule of test, but no Schedule of inspections which is wrong according to page 87 of GN3 paragraph 2.

He states 16mm earthing conductor but has only fitted 10mm

He states 6mm main bonding conductors when there is only a 4mm one to the gas and no bond at all on the water services.

He has put in the observation section that there is a n/e fault on the lighting circuit. A broken ring on down sockets (but has still fitted a 32A mcb) and there is no CPC continuity on some light fittings (no warning on CU)

No harmonised colour warning and no retest label of RCD one.

What to do about him>?

I have told them I would do a PIR before anything else and go from there but my initial assessment is that there is no need for a full rewire and the huge upheaval it would involve for them

I wonder if they will go back to him, I know I would.

If I don't get the job and he say he will put it all right and it does need a rewire I shall be peeved.

No labeling on the CU

I got a call from a fella a few months back, who was refurbing the bathroom at a property that I'd changed the cu at tail end of last year (funny enough that was hampshire way aswel)....

"The customer has asked me to call you for the EIC as he cant find his copy & I need it before doing the bathroom wiring."

You want a copy of the EIC, yes fine do you want the invoice made to you £10.00?

"yes right mate you having a giraffe, £10 for something thats the homeowners anyway... dont think so" (I thought a tenner was reasonable)

But he's had his copy & obviously lost them, so another set will cost him or you £10....

At this point he looses the plot & starts ranting on how he might give BC a call, as "you cant withhold hold certs".....

"Building control & NICEIC will want to know & I'll start with the fact you've not put up any labeling on the new board"

Crack on then mate, my photos of the job will proove other wise. Ask Mr ***** why I took the pictures before leaving...

Yes the customer didnt like the look of them, so said he was going to remove them when I'd left......He agreed to me taking the piccy as proof they were fitted.

So the moral of the story is just because they are not there, dont assume the sparks didnt put them on.

He is a friend of one of their friends, I said that they should at least call the scheme provider.. perhaps they would want to know.

I just can't get my head round him putting down on the section for main bonding 6mm. I mean he is just incriminating himself in a document.

As Comms says he could claim he left all the bonding in place and the client has altered things to "fit him up" but to actually write that just is it's own proof.

If there is no schedules of inspection the document is invalid, how can this person install a new CU and leave faults on the system.
Last week I had a CU change and there was no end to end continuity on the phase conductor narrowed this down to a wall where the kitchen had been fitted, the fault could have been there years, may have always been there.
Could not repair it, as inaccessibly. so now has two radials instead!

I have done the same above.

This guy is in a parrallal universe where it is ok to ignor any fault and just note it on the cert.

I thought I was going mad when I saw it.

So what?

So they probably won't want to upset their friend by dobbing his pal in.

But I have said to them that it is unforgivable for him not to at least have bonded the water services when there are electric showers in the house, or to have sorted out the faults.

I have not even mentioned yet that there are two light switches that if used cause the RCD to trip (presumably down to the N/E fault he refers to on his form) it is more unbelieavable the more I think about it.
