do what i do, put the new one in the holder, leave the old one on the dash on display,
I still dont see why we need tax discs anymore, if the adverts are to beleived, "they dont need to look there!"

I always thought that you could display the new tax disc as soon as you got it too :?:

the pnc (police national computer) is connected to the dvla database so they know which car is taxed or not most of the time now they don't even look at the disc

You can display a tax disc as soon as you get it, from the 15th of the previous month. It is valid, and it replaces any previous tax disc. The exp. date is printed in massive letters, it doesnt have a start date IIRC.

Hmmm ..... Not the way this reads.

When and where to display the disc
A vehicle tax disc shows the registration number and the date up to which you have paid vehicle tax. It comes into force on the day it is issued. But, if you apply for a tax disc in advance, it comes into force on the first day of the following month and you should not display it on your vehicle until then. You must display this disc on the left-hand side of the vehicle's windscreen. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen ......

Just slip the new 'disc' on top of the old in the display 'pocket' ... Keeps the discs together and easy to find.
;)

Whaaat :!: Just put back my old tax disc in again, I give up.

If my car is on the road, do I pop out at midnight and renew the tax disc on 31/01/06?

Oh another thing, my insurance certificate expires on 28/01/06 and won't be sent out until then and I had a hard time to get them to send it in early for me to renew the tax disc, I give up.

We have to be concerned over tax disc display when we are actually buying the things, and not cheating ....

Doo doo happens ....
Driving, this am, 32'ish in 30 limit, central traffic islands, car overtakes wrong side of road and therefore islands. (250 metres before roundabout and dual carriageway) I bet that gained some time...
Took me about 17 secs to roundabout.. he would need to have been averaging 66'ish to gain 8.5 secs .. What a praaaat.

Don't give up Maso, buy 6 mnths tax next time, covers you Feb to July incl. Then revert to 12 months tax periods, you have now shifted tax renewal to Aug. and circumvented the renewal date coincidence with Insurance....

Yep, just done that :!: A little dearer that way, never mind, old Brown winning again

Its also good to get MOT to a different month, have them all AFTER the tax

so what happens if you buy an old car with no MOT or tax. you go out, get it MOT'd, insured and taxed. then problems in a years time. just an excuse to fine you for not payin tax, even tho they wont let you

i think you have to do a SORN until it has an MOT. Can SORN at the post office, same process as taxing, updates DVLA computer straight away, so you can still tax it in, say, 2 days time. This sound the logical route anyway. Though the DVLA will still send you a letter in 2 weeks saying "thanks for SORNing"

alternatively, do the MOT a couple of weeks early, so you have plenty of time to fix any faults ;)
