I took delivery of my car on the 30th of November... went to tax it on the 1st of December thinking "Hehe, I'll not have to pay a whole month's tax for ONE DAY of road useage!".
Was I wrong... Had to pay a full month's road tax (1/12 of £150, but it's the principle!) for using the car from 2pm on the 30th of November.
Why is this still the case? If you have a mobile phone, Sky/cable TV, ADSL, basically any service, you are charged for the days you use. Why does car tax charge you a full month for any portion of a month used? It's the same if you hand in an unexpired disc, I believe.
With all the discussion of tax and MOT, I have one connecting the two: a tip from a mate who works in an MOT testing station. With the exception of the tax disc, anything greater than 40mm in diameter must not be affixed within the swept area of your windscreen wipers. Worth remembering if you have a parking permit or one of those things holding your AA/RAC card. Although, my parking permit breaks that rule and I have had a couple of MOTs with no mention of it!! Presumably they would bring it up if I stuck it right in the middle of the driver field-of-view, but next to the tax disc on the passenger side isn't an issue for them.
Aren't bike tax discs supposed to be fixed in front of the front axle on the LHS? I had mine attached midway between the wheels (on the left) and again, no problems.
Could it be that this is an area of the law where pedantry is not exercised?
