Allow me to explain it you in terms that a simpleton could understand.
The forthcoming election in May is for MSPs.to represent their constituents in the Scottish Parliament.

NS has said that if SNP get a decent majority she will push for a second referendum. It is that referendum that will allow people in Scotland to vote for independence or not, as they see fit.
So it is entirely possible for anyone to vote for SNP, but vote to remain in UK. They may support the majority of SNP policies but not independence. In fact they could support the majority of SNP policies, but not a referendum.
