and on the back part?

Is BT property and you interfere with it at the risk of a big bill if you screw it up.

Technicaly its your property, as its in your house.... BT responsible for upto the point of entry.... ie cable through wall....

They should use external masters, but they a re nice kind caring people and go the little but further and put the master in you house....

NO the master socket is BT's property. You have a responsibility to keep it safe. The master box is the normal Network Termination Equipment NTE for domestic installs

The one domestic exception is what used to be called "a farmer's line" where the NTE was a water proof junction box, pole mounted, at the edge of the highway and the wire to the farm house was installed and maintained by the farmer. Also used for houses a long way from the highway.

I said Technicaly.....

If its inside your house it belongs to you.... simple...

If your really pushy and dont want it inside, BT will fit you an external master.... but why would you do that.... after all you want a phone line from them...

Not really sure why it was suggested that the wire be stripped with wire strippers.

The whole idea of IDC is that the CW1304/6/8 BT internal grade cable 0.5mm is that the IDC makes connection through the cable, This connection is achieved due to mini razor type edges at the base of the IDC termination.

Thus when the cable is pushed down via IDC / Krone tool the blades bite the cable sheath making contact with the wire inside. Removing / stripping back the cable prior to IDC punch down serves no purpose and COULD make the termination a mtce 'weak' spot.

The screw terminals inside the NTE / master socket are the BT side (feed via street / pole), the IDC side is customers wiring.

Although we could argue boundaries and legality of DIY termination on the BT side I have never heard of BT sueing someone for working on the BT side. You would be charged an unhealthy amount should you call them in having cocked up the BT connection. However since you will note the cables before removal and re-termination it really isn't an issue to be concerned with.

The 2 wired from BT represent A and B legs, A being an earth and B being a battery. B should terminate on 2 and A on 5 of the BT screws inside the NTE / master. Polarity is unimportant, but should you wish to ID them, a meter between a earth such as a rad pipe and each wire will show one side to have above -50v DC (or -75v alternating DC on ringing cycle)
