I think one of the things you can check is, if it has https:// at the beginning and/or a closed padlock.

If in doubt, don't open it and contact them by other means. Never open any links until you know they are genuine.
If they do close the account, then I'm sure you would be able to open another.

***STOP***

DO NOT
click on the link in the email to login to your account.

Navigate to the site & login to your account how you would usually & check your account there.

Normally I do nothing. I don't have to.

I'm always careful, sometimes these scams are more convincing than others

Did you get it through your phone messages?
Have you ever given TfL your phone number?
If the answer is yes and no, in that order, it's a scam.

I had one a couple of months ago, and my answers to the above questions were yes and no, in that order.

So I thought I'd check with TfL to see how long it would take them to respond.
it took them several days, by which time I could have been scammed for a lot of money.

I replied to them pointing out how bad and slow they were about informing people that the messages were scams.

Can't you login to the actual TFL website and access your account?

The way these scammers work is as you probably are aware is send you an email that looks like an email from a trusted organisation - bank, council etc asking you to login because of some error or issue and then send you to a fake site with a similar looking url where you enter your account details and then you are in the s hite.

Circumvent all this and go direct to the TFL site or call them up?

If unsure do not follow their return path - ie click on this to fix your problem.
