Earlier this week, my mum decided to sort out the road tax for my stepfather's car.

She typed in the correct URL into the search box in her iPad's Chrome browser (the URL in the letter from the DVLA - it was verbatim).

Inadvertently, she clicked on the first result. She hadn't noticed that, in spite of having entered the correct (fully qualified) URL, Google will prioritise advertised links from even scummier firms (my opinion- not the opinion of this site- and under UK law, covered by "fair comment").

She entered the car reg number, the site correctly identified the vehicle and explicitly mentioned taxing the said vehicle. It gave her the option of pay monthly or annually. She selected the annual payment.

At the end of the web page it says (in my opinion) that you are only paying for the ability to enter your number plate and see which vehicle it is. And they will, seemingly, potentially charge you an annual fee to access the data that would otherwise be free at the aforementioned government website.

My elderly mother is probably only £12 down, the bank has issued her a new card so that they, the wnkers, cannot steal the onward £8 per month. She has been robbed of a fairly trivial sum, but has now lost her confidence to pay bills online. Why the feck do we, as a nation, force old people to be in in this situation? What happened to letting people phoning and paying?

I overheard my mum telling, an equally old friend, that she is no longer confident of making significant purchases online unless I, or my sister, are there at the time.

Sorry- I am angry. The government should not (in my opinion) force older people into this situation. And Google should not profit from people being complicit with people being ripped off.

The horrible irony is that when she entered the correct URL, our government is paying Google to be the first or second search result. When she searched- the "thieves" were first on the Google page. When I used the site later, they were second BUT the official site, the one that people should go to was third (after the promoted sites).

Why (as Brits) are we putting up with this? I am in my late 50s. I am very, very tech savvy, less so when it come to social media. I hate seeing people whom I love being confused. Anyone reading this- it might not be your mum, but it might be her tomorrow.

It’s a scary world nowadays.

Last week my wife downloaded some music and inadvertently introduced malware known as the yahoo divert virus…..took me bl00dly ages to get rid of the damn thing.

My Mother In Law is 80, she is very sharp but not too great with computers, I worry what happened to your mum might happen to her.

BTW Opps, I hope your domestic turmoil has settled down and things are going well again, I was sorry to hear as I’ve always enjoyed your decorating advice on here.

Google makes money from search hit placements as do the private companies that act as agents and rip off the unsuspecting public. I believe this was facilitated some years ago as part of the torey's privatising alternatives to directly accessing government websites. It's quite unnecessary and exploits
the vulnerable. You get it with powers of attorney. sites too.

Friends of our paid £35 per person to get a EHIC card through one of these scumbag sites. I think they just paid to be redirected to the government site where it is free.

The simple fix, is to use another search engine, than Google.

Did they receive a reminder letter? Mine is due soon and I received the aforementioned a couple of weeks back. It says 'Tax online at www . gov . uk / vehicle-tax' and when that url is entered it takes me straight to the government website?

Double and triple check you have the right site before going any further.
I have nearly made the mistake myself!!!

do you have a link to the site.

you mother appears to have charge back claim

The bank have recommended changing her debit card so that the monthly amount can not be processed. They seem to be unwilling to do a charge back at the moment- I guess they consider that she was at fault.

The URL is https://vehicleroadtax.co.uk

Here is a screenshot from a Google search on Chrome on my android

When I first Googled it, HMRC were the first sponsored result. The second time, it was the scumbag

Cheers mate, same old. On the upside, I am there to help my aging parents. I still have chite loads of tools that I need to move out of the garage that I built. Initially she told me my tools had to be out within a month. Ultimately, I am probably going to have to leave lower value stuff there, and she can pay for the two skips- naturally, I haven't told her that yet. I still have about £8-10k of tools in the garage (ones that I don't use often).

But based on the deliberate similarities of the site, I would report them to Action Fraud. They may assist you in getting the banks to reverse the payment.

There are enough reviews to suggest the passing off is intended to mislead.

You can also report them to get them de-listed

As per my last post, added after yours, chrome on either android or iOS does not take you to the requested/entered domain. You type in the correct domain name and it will provide you with options, including sponsored sites that are promoted over the result which you wanted.

Thanks mate. I will contact the ASA and stress that no reasonable person would want to pay hundreds of pounds to access data which is available for free.

The (advertised) screenshot that I provided does not make it clear that punters will be ripped off. IE they will pay for a service that they do not want and not receive the service that they were looking for .
