Maybe Gordon Gekko was right? Sales for tickets went up 1,000% for this week's lottery. Why? What's difference in change to average person's life of winning £100million or just a measly £10million?

Still think lottery is a stealth tax on the poorest and creates more problems than does good.

Wish all those playing it all the best though...they may need it...be careful what you wish for...

noodlz, funny you should say that about stealth tax. The shop i work at is in a very rough, poor area of rotherham, and i have never seen a shop sell so many scratchcards and lottery tickets! (not forgetting cans of cheap ale, "super-strength lager" and 99p cider, oh, and fags)

the shop near my house (same company, have also worked there), in doncaster, sells £30-60 in scratchcards each day. Our shop in rotherham sells £300+ per day. Its unreal.

We also have a lot more money going through paypoint (bill paying/phone topup/electric token machine) because a lot of people around that area dont have bank accounts for direct debits (many cant read  ), so have easy payment cards for paypoint terminals. We take at least 5-6 times more money on paypoint than the shop near my house!

Some odds Richard :(

Yes, Crafty, I think its very sad that people are treated so badly.
I'm all for people having fun and the odd flutter, but it's not right that the government also actively encourages excessive gambling when it knows its long-term consequences to communities. Then it uses lottery money to pay for causes which it should be paying for out of taxes, because its easier to do it this way. Governments are there to lead for the good of the country and not pander to our baser emotions. The tough conviction decisions it just doesn't take.

Not on the EuroMillions RP.
Any 5 from 50 with any 2 bonus numbers from 9
I reckon
50! ÷ ( 5! ( 50-5)!) = 2,118,760
9! ÷ ( 2! ( 9-2)!) = 36

36 x 2,118,760 = 76,275,360 to 1 chance of winning Jackpot with one entry matching the 7 numbers.

( Where 5! = 5x4x3x2x1 and so on. )
----------------------------

Normal Lottery 6 numbers from 49

49! ÷ ( 6! ( 49-6)!) = 13,983,816 to 1 as RP said.
-------
Players will say 'You gotta be in it to win it !'

sounds good to me so if i pick every number combination i will have a profit of 125,000,000 - 76,275,360

Wizard stats empip...ends up in an awful lot of people being factorialed

But look at the other prizes:

5+1 - 13 winners - £511000 each - half a million!!
5+0 - 25 winners - £75000 each
4+2 - 238 winners - £5660 each
........
1+2 - 1 million winners - £8.90 each
2+1 - 2.9 million winners!!!! - £7.40

The numbers are truly astronomical!

Next week (IIRC) if nobody wins, the jackpot will be distributed amongst the next winning tier. This is a 1 in 25 year event (12th rollover).

New rules were issued for future Euro rollovers - on the 12th rollover, the prize will be distributed evenly amongst the next winning tier. This once, they are letting it roll for the 13th (and 14th?) time, due to the new rule being introduced during a roll sequence.

And i cant see how they can run a competition where the odds of winning the top prize is 1 in 76 million  national lottery is bad enough with odds of 1 in 14 million!

With that logic, surely you'd have no problem getting people with spare £77million to invest - its a sure thing, right?...just one snag...what if someone else also chooses same numbers  Your investors would be none too happy ;)

Neither will you if one other person gets the 7 numbers too, you get 50% of jackpot .. It could be even worse !! There are not a finite number of tickets :D :D

In a works syndicate? ... I was ... daren't not be, after another dept hit £750k between 5 members, 5 others had packed it in about a month or so before, they really were as sick as parrots, some bad feeling ensued !! :D :D
