A report in the Guardian tells how The UK’s first legal drug consumption room, the Thistle, will open its doors in the East End of Glasgow on Monday morning after a 10-year battle to realise the pioneering facility. The Thistle will remain open 365 days a year from 9am to 9pm and allow some of the most vulnerable addicts in the city to take their own drugs in a clean and safe environment under the supervision of health professionals.

But this potentially transformative moment in UK drugs policy takes place with Scotland’s drug deaths still the worst per capita in Europe, the equivalent of three Scots dying every day. It emerged last week that more than 1,500 drug-addicted babies had been born in recent years, adding to widespread anger at the Scottish government’s continuing failure to arrest this trend, with underfunding of residential rehabilitation and wraparound care to support people getting into medically assisted treatment.

I don't see how a specialised 'safe space' for the ingestion of hard drugs will help much at all. Amsterdam killed off the Cannabis cafe's and why Scotland considers a decriminalised zone for heroin, while refusing to legalise the consumption of cannabis is baffling.

Because it will:

Reduce blood borne diseases, reducing the impact on the NHS.
Put them in a place where social services and rehab facilities are available
Make sure if they do OD or get bad drugs theres someone to give first aid until the ambulance gets there.

This is all about harm minimisation.

Why not give 'em an after dinner mint, an' all.

bloody hell! I can't open a pack o' baccy without a lurid description of someone's cancer opration, or the revolting example of how bad your teeth get if you don't brush 'em. Surely some attempt to reduce the number of users should be made.

If it saves the NHS money then yes, buy all the after eights needed.

This is an attempt to reduce drug use. By getting them into a treatment program you might be able to get them off drugs.
