If we didn't have traffic parking rules the centres of our cities would be completely stuffed, but these are the sorts of people who think rules which make society work a little better only apply to others.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that the city centres are full of closed shops, so surly it would make sense to use them as car parks.....

We shall not need car parks in town centres when, thanks to greedy councils, all the shops have closed down.

No rates from shop owners, no money from car parks, how will they fund their enormous salaries and expensive junkets then?

Our local council has cause a bit of controversy, by stating that in the future they will charge £40 to empty the brown recycling bin. Adding that anyone who doesn't want to pay the charge is free to put their garden waste in the black bin (for which there will be no charge)
As the council already provide the waste services (including the brown bin) at no extra cost, I'm totally perplexed as to why they should want to introduce this extra charge, then tell people they can chuck their garden waste in the bliack bin for free. Councillors don't seem to live on the same planet.

I almost thought that you'd made that up John but it seems it's becoming increasingly common across the country. I've got a couple of compost heaps and if they want to charge over here they can take my bin away for good.

Thing is Ladylola, with this recycling malarky, we are already doing part of the council's job, by sorting the waste for them. The cheeky bluggers now want to charge us for the waste we have sorted. As far as I'm concerned, Derby City Council can take my brown bin away and any gardening waste can go in their black bin. I'm already paying for bin collection, so why would I want to pay again?

Oh I agree with you John and can't really see the logic in it. It may save a bit of money in the short term but it won't encourage recycling and if people put their waste in the black bins it'll only put more pressure on landfill
The general recycling I have no problem with , some people moan alarmingly about it but at it's only a second or two more opening an extra bin lid.

It would be nice to think that, living in a democracy, we could influence the decisions that these idiot councillors make every time we have a local election. Unfortunately, at least where I live, the Limp Dems get in easily every time (I should quickly point out that I don't vote for them).

Of course, one might imagine that, in retaining their seats every time, our councillors would claim that their policies have public support. This, presumably, is repeated in all parts of the country and so I suppose we should not be complaining as it is 'we' (not me, of course) who are encouraging them to continue their mindless ideas.

I was told if they don't hit their targets for recycling they don't get their subsidies from the EU and they get penilised.

Very little of the stuff you put into 'recycling' bins actually gets recycled anyway. Most of it is dumped in land fill. A few years ago a journalist found some gas and electricity bills from the UK at the side of a rubbish dump in India. (The rubbish dumps in India often spill out onto the road) He brought them back and took them to the householders who confirmed they had put them in the 'recycling'. Can't remember the local authority but I'm sure it was East Midlands somewhere? There was also a recent article which claimed less than 5% actually gets recycled.

That sounds about right. They tick the correct boxes, then the EU gives them some money. Then they forget about recycling.
