I'm faintly surprised that you pretend never to have noticed lightening conductor installations on tall buildings, and the copper strips running along roofs and down walls to earth.
 
Interestingly, I used an old copper pipe offcut to support a plant in my garden. That plant seems strong and healthy.
 
Although, copper nails can [apparently] be used to kill the dreaded leylandi!
