thumping in pipes

I have a oil fired weil-mclaim boiler with seperate water heater. I hear a slight thump 24 hours a day.. its like my heat pumbing but sometime its faint and other times louder. I have to listen during a quiet house to har it or be in bed at night. It is not a banging noice but a thump or beat but very faint.... if i enter the basement i cannot hear it at all. the house is ranch and very long with 5 zones. than you.... yogibear0864
