When?? how much???
after hair appointments? after a coffee in a cafe? after average bar meal?, after expensive meal? dilemma....
girlfriends and I discussed this over bottle of wine ( or several) and decided that we tip out of feeling duty bound to do so rather than because service warranted it.
we discussed the 'minimum ' tip... say when you go alone for a coffee which is almost thrown at you and most ends up on the saucer.
Or when you go for a hair cut and the stylist spends all time talking to stylist stood next to them about amorous exploits or not of previous night!!
so... how do we figure on tipping???

perhaps yr right...
I am risking sounding like a tight **** ( self edited!!.. Im learning)
but sometimes I feel like tipping, when the food and or service has been good but so often I feel that I ( and other girlfriends) feel we ought to tip, especially for bar meals.
Also... how are others on the subject on complaining???
again, my girlfriends and I go out for meals and discuss each others meals, hot or cold or the fact that the waiter/tress ( pc correct!!!) had a face like fat and we, none if us, dare ask for more wine etc...
The miserable waiter./tress asks after ten minutes... is everything ok? and we all say, ''fine thanks'' then moan like hell afterwards.
One time we were out and out of 7 of us, 5 meals were cold and their were hairs in 2 meals. This was not a cheap establishment. we commented on the fact and were accused of being a girls ( well, that was a compliment, we were allover 30)night out looking for a free meal!!! arggghhhh!!!!

Am I and my pals too soft or do others feel obliged to accept slap dash standards too leniently?

i blame you.

how can they improve if you dont tell them, that is why they ask is everything ok

yes, I see your point.. and you are right. Its just hard sometimes when the look on the face of the person asking doesnt seem to interpret genuine desire to better the owners reputation.
I guess it is totally down to speaking out.. just not always that easy... especially when mid way through meal and having heard night mare stories of what happens to the meals of those who dare complain!!!

Tipping;

50p for a haircut if the haircutter is friendly and you don't walk out looking like boris carloff, otherwise nothing.

about 10% or round-up to £ for taxi if the driver is friendly and doesn't drive like a t****r, othwerwise nothing.

Restaurant, anything between 5% and 15% depending on how good the service was and how good a night you had, otherwise nothing. If the food is c**p but the service is lovely I leave a tip on the table. If the food was good I leave a tip on the bill or at the bar.

Barmeals, not as a rule but left a £3 tip on the table yesterday because the barmaid was a sweetie and gave me a free glass after I spilt a glass of wine over my darling wife!

I no longer tip out of a feeling of 'duty'. And if a meal or the service is bad I have a bit of a reputation for saying so if anyone asks is everything ok.

I think its a Brit thang...we get a meal served by a miserable waiter/ess..cold..tough steak hard chips etc...and when they come up and utter 'everything ok?' we sit back, smile and say..'oh yes lovley thanks'...

I for one would only have a grumble AFTER a meal...after seeing programmes like 'when chefs bite back'....I wouldnt send anything back...ive never fancied steak a'la snot....

But the last meal I went for I complained about the steak which was like shoe leather...mentioned it first to the waitress...who told the chef...whos response was...'I'll tell the supplier'....crap!

What a terrible attitiude...if that was America things would have been done

But Brits being Brits...we put up with it...

If i go for a meal and the food has been dire but the wiatress has been good..I always put the money in her hand and tell HER to keep it herself

If you really ant to make a point with tipping...leave a penny...they will get the message.

I cant understand why people tip cabbies...it cost 7.50 here for a five minute ride...the cabbie has just made a killing out of you...so why give him more?

here (USA), generally speaking......use common sense, if you enjoyed your meal and the svc sucked, have a work with the owner/mgr-if they don't know about it, they can't do anything about it. If the svc is great but the food was bad, chances are, they will ask is everything ok?--speak up (but be nice about it--they don't have to ask) Tipping should be earned, not expected.

oh..and do keep in mind, they make a living, too. Working with the public is no easy task.....we all have bad days...so do they. ;)

Could you imagine if you leave a tip and on your way out, and the waitress pulls you and says by the way you got to pay V.A.T on your tip
Iwoul;d say fu#k that give my tip back

Is the tipping tax free?????

no, its not!! if you leave cash on the table and the staff have their own tip jar which they divide amongst themselves that's fine, but if it goes on the credit card and is handled by management it has to be taxed.

Exactly, it's classed as income, so it's better to leave cash. Some owners/managers will even count cash tips as staff income, tight barstewards.
