I was also instructed as an apprentice in the local shipyard that crimping of solid cores was not allowed.... and often cite a NASA 'working practices handbook' (or something like that) which forbids the crimping of solid conductors.
I can certainly understand the logic of it, which is one of the main reasons why I am personally not totally comfortable about the practice.
