Planning on using my old titan extractor to get as much dust as possible when raking out the joints before repointing. Is there any benefit to not using the filter, or not using a bag? I’m thinking it’s going to kill the filter pretty quick but better that than killing the machine… it’s out in the open air so I don’t mind some dust but aiming to avoid a massive amount going over neighbours cars etc…
Cheers

Yeah, probably. I’m not sure whether the bag filters out the bulk of the dust or the filter does

makes sense, might try keeping the filter and ditching the bags and see how it goes

The filter is more expensive and a nuisance to change when it clogs. I use a filter, and a bag as well. That way the filter lasts a long time.

You can actually clean the pleated cardboard filters. A soft brush will remove fluff and hair, the loose fine stuff and grit washes out under a tap, and you can use a stiff brush, under the tap, to remove anything stuck in the grooves. Let it dry completely before using it again.

Thanks guys, sounds like I’m better sticking with how it’s meant to be used

i could be wrong but suspect the filters physically protect the motor as the airflow comes up the hose into the drum where the volume expansion drops the heavy stuff but the dust and other suspended material will travel over the motor windings to exhaust

Absolutely right, it will explode in about a minute without a bag.

I used an old hoover for repointing. With bags. It survived (just), and did a great job.

But still blast out with the hose after, leaving it dust-free and a bit damp after it's dried is also a good thing.
