Add my voice to the chorus but the Irwin Jack saws have changed the game for saws at a fiver a throw.. have tried the Stanleys and others but didn't find them half so good to use.. can't fault em!
What sort of life span do you expect from a "throwaway" handsaw ?
I've been using Irwin jack saws for quite awhile, but the last couple don't seem to be as good, they still appear quite sharp when starting off a cut, but as the blade enters the timber, it becomes harder to use as if there is not enough set on the teeth and the blade is jamming (much worse if the timber is wet) Are all makes similar ?
I noticed an offer in b+q yesterday Spear and Jackson predators buy one get one free (£10)

I've experienced this myself. On an occassion I only had a brand new jack and a rough older one and a formica worktop to cut. Not wanting to ruin the brand new one I tried running a file over the old one. Surprisingly it sharpened up without much difficulty, although didn't last as long as a new saw. However, I've tried this again and sometimes the file hasn't touched the teeth which is I suppose the reaction one would expect. In the end I put it down to quality control.
