I managed to fit the towel rad using telescopic extension tails in the end. Took 4 attempts to achieve a leak free installation. On the 4th try, I disassembled the telescopic tails by removing the retaining ring and wrapping 10 turns of PTFE around the pipe sections of the telescopic extension tails. As you can see, there are two o-rings inside each tail. Also, I made doubly sure to align the telescopic extension tails precisely with the valves. They must go on straight.
Make no mistake, the lateral tolerance on these extendable tails is zero. If the extension part that attaches to the valves is slightly off-centre then the o-rings won't form a watertight seal. The PTFE tape meant that the extenders were difficult to move up and down, but still doable with a little force.
I don't mind saying that I got a lot of satisfaction from getting this done - finally!
I think I prefer The Expendables to The Extendables!
