It was longer ago than that that I heard the idea....I think it unlikely on an auto manufactured in the last 30 years...
It used to be that you couldn’t tow an auto at any great speed or distance unless the box had a prop driven oil pump. I wouldn’t like to tow an auto at 50mph anyway.

Sounds like a scene from Mission Impossible!I read once that it is possible to bump-start an automatic. Apparently you need a hill long and steep enough to get to about 50mph and then fling it into drive.
Never tried it.
