I read once that it is possible to bump-start an automatic. Apparently you need a hill long and steep enough to get to about 50mph and then fling it into drive.

Never tried it.

I think it unlikely on an auto manufactured in the last 30 years...

I think it's theoretically possible with a torque converter auto (though not very kind to it!) but not one of the automated manual transmissions like VW's "DSG" auto boxes, as the latter will need power to the clutches to make them engage.
