Toyota have an interlock mechanism, either the conditions have not
been met or the lock bit has failed.

Some are electronic, some manual with a button near the lock. Electronic require it to be in park for instance, so there may be a gear lever mounted switch.

Sorry never had one just aware of this problem from others but it seems as if they have an interlock of some means.

With the automatic I believe there is a switch on the gearbox that effectively locks the key in place until park is selected so there could be a fault with this - or maybe a blown fuse.

The manual versions, I believe, have a push button that needs depressing.

Any fault in these could have the effect of locking the key in position.

I'm sure you tried, but if you take the pressure off the lock by turning the steering wheel while trying the key at the same time?

Have you a side button to release the key or should it just pull out?
