Tread depth - new tyres

NB: Very important point. Always update your insurance when you change to winter tyres especially if you got a relatively quick car. All of our MB's and BMW's years ago as they were rear-wheel drive got winter tyres all year round and we updated the insurance. Most winter tyres had lower speed limits than the standard tyres for our cars but the insurance people were ok with it as they easily exceeded the national speed limit. However, every insurance co is different.

Winter tyres we bought were continentals, winter contact i think they were called they made our rear-wheel drive cars drive better than most 4x4 cars

Even 4x4 cars benefit greatly from winter tyres if you are going to the hills etc and in some countries you have to have winter tyres in winter as its the law

So tell your insurance co

please do not thank me

I feel very strongly about this. I don't think I should be required to tell the insurance company when we swap to Winter tyres on our car, because the winter tyres are of a size, speed and load rating that is listed on its Certificate of Conformity (meaning it was type approved for that size and rating of tyre). If it was type approved with them, then it's none of the insurance company's business what I fit - just like if I swapped from (say) a Michelin to a Pirelli Summer tyre of the same size, load and speed rating. I think I probably feel strongly enough about this to go to court if I had to!

This was discussed extensively in newspaper columns a couple of years ago and it is not required if the tyres remain within the range of sizes homologated by the manufacturer.
