Recently put through mot my runaround Focus and examiner said there's some rust on subframe that I better treat before it becomes a problem.
My plan is to use a wire brush to remove flaky paint/rust and then use a rust converter product.
Any recommendations about a particular brand?

Kurust is quite good and you can paint over it.

Red oxide primer, and oil-based gloss paint, give quite good protection, and are easy to apply and touch up if necessary. There are more modern metal preservative primers that are rather expensive.

Some people still think Hammerite is good, but rust can grow under the paint, it is very difficult to apply, clean up and recoat.

On the old mini's the rear subframe rusted out but the front got so much oil on it they never rusted

Traditionally, British motorbikes included their own rustproofing function.

Especially on the rear tyre.
