What the Secretary for Defense is proposing as a contingency is to have 3,500 servicemen and women from both active and reserve forces "held at readiness". That figure also means 98.5% of active and reserve forces are unaffected by this potential decision.

We have used our armed forces to guard sites and events many times, this is a sensible precaution. I went to watch Derby County play our nearest rival on Monday and there were armed police there.
