People were effectively pushed out as a result of "Kenyanisation", a plan to replace non-citizens with Kenyan (read black African Kenyan in many cases) citizens. Many didn't hold passports but were entitled to British passport, which is why many moved to Uganda, for a while, and quite a few used the fact that they held British passports to come here.
