Hi,

After what feels like 100s of hour of work I have finally striped the many layers of paint from the wooden staircase in my place and I am now ready to sand and treat the wood.

I am aiming for a clear finish, as smooth as possible.

I was planning on using multiple coats of tung oil as the treatment but I am concerned about the durability of the dried tung oil. I cannot identify the wood by it is very close grained with a faint red tint to it.

Would the tung oil finish give a suitably durable finish or should I be looking to a super tough finish like the dulux diamond glaze?

I stripped some stairs over 20 years ago, in a Victorian house. I put 2 coats of shellac varnish, aka french polish, on with a fine brush. There is no obvious need to do anything with them up to now, so despite the general view that this old stuff is not hard wearing, 20 years of hard daily use says otherwise.
