Yes looked like a capacitor it had a valve base from memory and in essence turned DC to AC and fed it to a transformer then it was turned back to DC think from memory around 90 volt was used with the old valve sets. I had a hand cranked converter once it ran the set using two outputs one for heaters and one for main part of radio. I was told they were useless as if the user took a spell all the heaters cooled down and then radio needed re-tuning once warmed up again as at that time they tended to drift as they warmed up.
