I folks. My girlfriend's daughter has got a computer and broadband. My girlfriend is getting her own computer. How do they rig them up so that they can share the broadband connection? Cheers.

The daughter has a laptop through a radio job and the mum has a standard PC.

if the radio one is the one that is working now then i assume there is a wireless router installed you just need to get wireless on the other one.

have a look what is on the end of the bt line

It is a virgin media modem that the daughter plugs her radio link into. Can you get some kind of splitter like they use in student flats?

the radio link will probs be an access point, ethernet in radio out, other wireless equipment should be able to connect to it

You just need a wireless cable router, this connects to the virgin modem. (sounds like you may already have this from your description)

You can then either use a long patch lead from the PC to the router, or install a PCI wireless card and connect over wireless.

Excuse me for being thick, but can I get one router/splitter that the PC plugs into and the wireless thingi plugs into that makes them totally separate from each other so they can be used at the same time via the Virgin modem?

It does sound like you already have a wireless router. If you do then an ethernet cable plugged into the router and connected to your girlfriend's computer should see her up and running. ;) ;)

OK cheers, I'll have a better look tomorrow.

The Netgear router that VM give to customers is wireless capable and also has 4 ethernet connections on the back. So theoretically you could connect 4 computers via ethernet cables and umpteen computers wirelessly to the one cable modem.
My computer is connected to mine via ethernet as as is my girlfriends.
When one of the grandchildren come over with their laptop, I let them connect via the wireless side. If anything once the laptop is connected wirelessly, broadband just seems to slow down a little bit. But I'd expect that anyway as we are all sharing a 10mb connection speed.
Almost forgot to mention, when you get a router from VM they ask you to install VM wireless manager on to a computer, so you can set a username and password for the router. Onc eyou have set this then any wireless computer will find the wireless connection and you'd have to enter your password onto the laptop to enable the wireless connection.

Quite simple really. ;) ;) ;) ;)

not all are like that, i've seen vm where you get a cable modem, with 1 ethernet socket, and 1 ip address, if you want more than 1 pc on it you have to fit a router with ethernet in and ethernet out and optionally wireless out

Actually it's the same modem as mine and I've just looked and it's only got one lead out. Only one socket.
