There was a spat over European Rights Laws being written into the CETA deal with Canada. The EU are championing human rights and democracy clauses being written into trade deals.
To be fair, that's maybe no bad thing when dealing with countries like China and Russia.
In Canada, they have Indeterminate prison sentences for very serious offences, basically they throw away the key.
In Australia, they have the Dangerous Prisoners (sexual offenders) Act 2003, when a dangerous sexual offender has served his sentence, he's not necessarily released.
Both of these fall foul of European Human Rights laws.
