Be fair, with Britain the only non-neutral Western Power remaining, in the absence of the US eventually joining in, things would have turned out very different. The Axis and the Soviet Union would have become too well entrenched for the US or anyone else to take them on without our large and unsinkable aircraft carrier off the West coast of Europe. So they had to act before we were defeated or reached an accomodation. And you didn't lend, you saw an opportunity to make some money out of it. Some kind of ally that is...
The business of America is business.to quote an American president, they also supplied this country with troops. That may be true, but they still saw it as an opportunity to make a lot of money out of those in desperation.
Had they truly been brothers in arms, they would have given us the stuff, or at least binned the debt after the war and not expected payment and a hefty wodge of interest over the next 50-odd years.
It might also have helped if they'd have actually turned up on time to scrap, not several years late.
