My new years resolution many years ago was to avoid people like the OP of the question of how much an engineer is worth. Can you do it cheaper for cash is the usual opening line. Just as well pay tax than knock of more than 20%.
I had a customer who knocked £ 60.00 of my bill when helping his three children with a Vaillant and BG cover in the snow. Vaillant dirty water excuse BG beyond economical repair, I repaired it. Are you sure you don't live in Dorset and a teacher?
He subsequently phoned me on a Sunday morning many months later with a leak from the upstairs bathroom. I said I would have a look at it for £60.00 cash, he agreed, and that's what I did. Went to look at the job, money up front and then recommended he call a plumber.
Off to pub and a nice roast dinner had by all.
