...Consider a bottle of fizzy pop.... Turn it upside down and unscrew the lid, that's the way you should be unscrewing the thumb screw (it's not really a nut) off of the shower valve!

The nut on the shower, looking at it from below or from the front at eye level - which is the only way you should look at it really IMO - loosen it anticlockwise.
If you're hold the shower head in your left hand so the hose is running towards you, again the nut loosens anticlockwise.

I had my younger nephew mechanical engineer take a look (I've now pulled a muscle in my lower back!), who says he cannot get a grip on the thread.
Is there a type of spanner I can order which has a handle that allows me to tighten the gripping part (what is that called - jaws?) with a rotating handle (what's the called?) to provide leverage? Turning a thumb wheel to try and tighten the jaws is hopeless. Either that or something that allows me to ratchet up the spanner to the tighteness I need.

When you grip it keep part of the width of the grips below the bottom of the nut otherwise the pressure needed to get a grip will crush the threads tighter against the shower outlet making it even harder to undo
Personally, I avoid anything with “pro” in its description, just an advertizing gimic to make diyers think they are getting something special, aimho of course

Im really struggling with this. Any tool I try and use just doesnt grip the thumb screw as I turn it (the correct way around).
Is there a type of tool which has a type of vice connected to a spanner which allows me to turn a long handle to tighten the jaws so that it compresses against the thumb screw even tighter. Those spanner with a screw thread type vice just doesnt offer the leverage I need to tight the jaws.

The only way that any of those items would fail to grip, is if you have applied them to the nut facing the wrong way.
What is it you're trying to achieve here? Just change the hose?
If after all this time and with all these tools it hasn't gone then it isn't going to go for you.
