Hello All,
Recently moved into a 3 storey house with unvented CH system comprising (a) Keston C40 boiler on Ground Floor (for water and CH) and (b) Two separate CH loops (1st feeding ground floor rads, 2nd feeding 1st and 2nd Floor rads) including Orange Pressure vessel (in Cellar next to Megaflo DHW cylinder) and various pumps.

Noticed I was getting air in the highest 2nd floor radiator on a regular basis (radiator went cold on one side every couple of days). I’ve been bleeding this and the pressure in the system has gone down by about 0.1bar in 2 weeks (about half a dozen bleeds over this time) from 1.5bar to 1.4bar.

I assume this means there’s a leak somewhere – but I’ve checked the rads several times (when cold) and there are no leaks visible and there is also no discharge from Pressure Vessel PRV. Measured Pressure vessel 'air side' at about 21psi(1.4 bar) - but only done this with water pressure on other side.

About to call in a plumber – but wondered if there’s anything else I can check. Bleed air is a bit smelly, so I’m wondering if I need inhibitor (but I didn’t expect it to smell nice!). Also, I’ve heard that pumps or boiler can lead to air getting in – but not sure how to check.

Any ideas appreciated before I get my wallet out?

Thanks.

Stop bleeding ! Thats why your pressure is going down! Why do you have to fiddle with it?

Check air pressure in orange vessel with system pressure at ZERO. See the FAQ.

Add inhibitor, X100 preferably!

Then see how nicely it runs!

Agile,
I realise the bleeding is causing the loss of pressure - but I've got a cold radiator with air in it. That's why I'm fiddling.

Not used to unvented systems, so to measure the pressure vessel when the system pressure is zero do I have to drain down the whole system?

Hello Agile,
What I want to know if where is the air getting in?
(Surely I can't just leave the cold radiator).
